Why I’m High on CofC Baseball in 2025
Winning 41 games and a CAA regular-season championship, only to be left out of the NCAA Tournament? 2025 the College of Charleston Cougars are coming with vengeance.
Pitching: The Strength of This Team
If CofC is going to make sure there’s no doubt about its postseason credentials this year, it starts on the mound. And thankfully, the Cougars return 67% of their innings from last season, including two absolute dudes at the top of the rotation.
Jake Brink is as good of a Friday night ace as you’ll find in mid-major baseball. The dude was 8-2 last year, and I expect him to take another step forward in 2025. He’s got the kind of presence on the mound that gives you a shot to win every single Friday night.
The Lineup: A Mix of Veterans & Young Stars
On offense, this team is built to grind out at-bats and wear pitchers down. The heart of the order will be led by graduate senior Avery Neaves, who already has a national championship ring from his time in D3. He’s an elite bat with real power, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the CAA Player of the Year conversation by season’s end.
And let’s talk about Dylan Johnson, the rock behind the plate. This dude caught every single inning last year. That’s insane in today’s game. He’s not just a workhorse, he’s a leader, and having that kind of presence behind the plate is a massive advantage.
If you’re looking for new faces to make an impact, keep an eye on the left side of the infield: third baseman Landon Penfield and shortstop Rafael Soto. If those guys produce early, this lineup goes from solid to really dangerous.
The Schedule: A Chance to Prove It
The Cougars play 37 home games at Patriots Point, with some key weekend matchups against App State, Campbell, Delaware, and UNCW.
But it’s the midweek schedule that’s really intriguing. Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, The Citadel—those are all high-quality, must-win games that could be the difference in making the tournament.
And don’t forget the big road trips. The Cougars are heading to North Carolina and South Carolina, with a matchup at Segra Park in Columbia that will be a prime opportunity to make a statement.
This team isn’t just playing to win games. They’re playing to make sure what happened last year NEVER happens again. Bolstering the RPI and forcing the hands of the committee to make sure the college baseball world knows they are for real.
